Our business
Edison operates in the procurement, production and distribution
of electric power and hydrocarbons (natural gas and crude oil)
business.
Electric power
With 33.2 billion kWh produced in 2011 and a share of about 11.5% of total national production, Edison is Italy’s second largest electric utility.
Edison’s portfolio of production facilities, with an aggregate capacity of more than 11.5 GW, includes some of Italy’s most modern power plants, with over 8 GW represented by combined-cycle, cogenerating systems fired with natural gas (CCGT), the most efficient technology available today.
Edison also has an important presence in power generation from renewable sources, mainly with hydroelectric and wind power facilities.
Hydrocarbons
In recent years, Edison rapidly increased its available supply
of natural gas, which grew from about 3.5 billion cubic meters in
2000 to more than 15.2 billion cubic meters in 2011, reaching a
market share of 19.6%.
The Company owns hydrocarbon reserves, located
mainly in Italy and Egypt, for a total amount of 49.8
billion cubic meters.
In 2011, in addition to the gas it produced in Italy (0.5
billion cubic meters), Edison produced and marketed 1.7 billion
cubic meters of natural gas outside Italy. Crude oil production
totaled 3.5 million barrels (including 2.1 million barrels in
Italy).
Edison is also active in the
gas storage business: its storage centers (two
operational and one under construction) have a working gas
capacity of 0.5 billion cubic meters.
