italian activities

Edison’s research efforts in the Hydrocarbons date back on the late 50’s and focused almost exclusively in Italy.
The first gas discovery was found in 1953. Since then Edison has always played a leading role in the Italian energy sector with further discoveries of major importance: the gas field at Cellino in 1958, Portocannone in 1963 and the discovery of the Vega oilfield in the Sicilian channel in 1981. At the end of the 80’s the maturity of the Italian industry led us to look further abroad, beginning with the Mediterranean Basin.

Currently, Edison holds 60 concessions and permits.

OFFSHORE OIL FIELDS

Sarago Mare Field
Ownership : Edison 95% - Gas Plus Italiana 5%
Operator: Edison
The Sarago Mare deposit of heavy oil is located in the Adriatic, offshore the Marche region, facing the towns of Porto di Civitanova and Porto Sant’Elpidio, about 2-3 km from the coast in about 13 meters of water.

Rospo Mare Field
Ownership: Edison 61.7175% - ENI 38.3%
Operator: Edison
The Rospo Mare offshore field is located in the Adriatic, between the towns of Vasto and Termoli, about 20 km from the Abruzzo coast, at a depth of 80 meters.

Vega Field
Ownership: Edison 60% - ENI 40%
Operator: Edison
The Vega oil deposit is located in the Strait of Sicily, about 25 km from the coast of Marina di Ragusa, in water 120-130 meters deep. Production is channeled from the Vega A platform to the Leonis storage tanker, with a capacity of 110,000 tons, which is anchored to a buoy and attached to a sea line of about 2 km. The crude oil is transported from the Leonis to the refineries by tankers.

OFFSHORE FIELDS

Anemone Field
Ownership : Edison 19% - ENI 81% (*)
Operator: ENI
This offshore field is located in the Adriatic, about 20 km from the coast in19 meters to 22 meters of water.
(*) The 14.33% interest held by Stargas was transferred to ENI following the divestment of the company, which was acquired by Gas Plus Italiana.

Daria Field
Ownership: Edison 49% - ENI 51%
Operator: ENI
The Daria offshore field is located in the Adriatic, in about 56 meters of water. The development of this field, which required the installation of two platforms (a drilling platform and a production platform), was completed in mid-December 1995, when the last completed well (Daria 11d) was completed. The gas reaches the Fano processing center by means of a 30-km sea line.

Regina Field
Ownership: Edison 25% - ENI 75%
Operator: ENI
The Regina field was discovered in the spring of 1995 with the drilling of the Regina 1 Dir exploratory well, which revealed a significant accumulation of natural gas. The well was completed as a mono-bore well. Two additional wells drilled in the summer of 1996 (Regina dir and 2 dirA) confirmed the natural gas accumulation shown by Regina 1. The field was developed in 1997, when three wells (Regina 3, 4, and 5d) were drilled from a platform located east of the Regina 1 mono-bore.

Squalo Centrale Field
Ownership: Edison 33.3% - Adriatica Idrocarburi (ENI) 66.67%
The Squalo offshore field is located in the Adriatic between Giulianova and Pescara at a depth of about 70 meters and about 17 km from the coast. The production platform, which was used to drill six wells, is linked with the Pineto processing center by means of a dedicated sea line.

Emma West Field
Ownership: Edison 49% - Adriatica Idrocarburi (ENI)  51%
Operator: ENI
The Emma West offshore field is located in the Adriatic between Giulianova and Pescara, about 30 km from the coast, in about 104 meters of water.
The field was developed by drilling 8 dual-completion production wells from a platform. A new exploration phase started in 1993 to verify the potential of the “thin layers,” which were known and productive in the adjacent Giovanna field.

Giovanna Field
Ownership: Edison 49% - Adriatica Idrocarburi (ENI) 51%
Operator: ENI
The Giovanna offshore field was discovered in 1984 in the Adriatic, at a water depth of about 120 meters, about 35 km from the Pescara coast.

Clara Complex (Clara North - Clara East Calipso - Cecilia - Elettra) Field
Ownership: Edison 49% - ENI 51%
Operator: ENI
The name Clara Complex includes a complex of deposits grouped in a relatively small area that have similar characteristics in terms of the type of reservoir. All of these offshore fields are located in the Adriatic, Northeast of Ancona.

Clara West Field
Ownership: Edison 49% - ENI 51%
Operator: ENI
The Clara West is located in the Adriatic, about 28 km from the coast of Ancona, in about 70 meters of water. A platform with 8 wells with dual selective completion has been installed at this location.

Panda Field
Ownership: Edison 40% - ENI 60%(*)
Operator: ENI
The Panda 1 offshore well is located in the Strait of Sicily, about 22 km from the coast of Sicily, at a depth of about 461 meters.
(*) Edison acquired 15% of the interest held by BGR. ENI acquired the balance.

ONSHORE GAS FIELDS

Portocannone Field
Ownership : Edison 62.42% - ENI 12.5% - Gas Plus Italiana 25.08%

vega platform in sicily

Vega, the largest fixed offshore oil platform built in Italy, went into production in 1987.

Field. Located about 12 miles south of the town of Pozzallo, a town on Sicily’s southern coast, it includes a crude oil production platform (Vega A) and a floating storage facility with a capacity of 110,000 tons.
Currently, there are 20 producing wells. The platform incorporates cutting edge technologies for the safety of the staff and the environment.

Deposit. It is located below sea level, at a depth ranging from 2,400 meters to 2,800 meters and covers an area of about 28 km2.

Platform. It rests on the seabed in about 122 meters of water. It is equipped with a combined gas/fire detection and emergency shutdown system.

Floating storage facility. It was developed by transforming the Leonis oil tanker into an FSO (Floating – Storage – Offloading). This new double-hull unit, which replaced an earlier single-hull vessel, complies with E.U. regulations.

The work of converting the Leonis ship started in the Trieste dry dock and continued in a shipyard at the Port of Augusta. After the hull had been cleaned, painted and structurally reinforced, the crude oil loading intake systems were upgraded and all required safety systems were installed. Lastly, the vessel was equipped with collective and individual rescue equipment and the communication and personnel transportation systems were installed.
