Edison owns one of the most modern plant systems operating in Italy, largely based on the most efficient technology currently available: Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT).
Edison's presence is also noteworthy in the renewable energy technology areas, mostly with hydroelectric plants and wind farms.

With 41.6 billion kWh produced in 2009, Edison is Italy's second-largest sector operator, having a market share of 15.0% of national output. Approximately 14% of the energy sold by the Group is regulated by CIP6/92 contracts. Due to the spark spread strong decrease, Edison is increasing the sales on the free market to final clients (residential, industrial and commercial customers) and to wholesalers with bilateral contracts; it has also dramatically reduced its operations on the spot market and increased the purchases in the Electric Power Exchange (IPEX) in order to balance the sources / uses ratio.

One year after the introduction of its first electric power sales package for residential customers, at the end of Setember 2009 Edison presented to the residential marke a broad range of affordable solutions for all levels of natural gas and electric power consumption requirements, equally available throughout Italy, from large cities to small towns.

On October 5, 2009 the new electric power infrastructure connection between Italy and Switzerland has been put into operation; EL.IT.E, a company owned by Edison (48.45%), Raetia Energie (46.55%) And Tirano municipality (5%) is the company that built the line and runs it. The power line guarantees a 150 MW increase to the interconnection capacity between Italy and Switzerland.
